Hello,

I hope you're having a wonderfully relaxing summer! Many driven, high functioning people actually sometimes struggle to slow down, so I encourage you to remember that downtime actually has great benefits-- many studies have shown that we have our biggest creative breakthroughs on problem-solving directly after a period of total downtime, even sometimes after a period of boredom. So I invite you to lay back and "watch the grass grow" a bit this summer if you can:)

While I do enjoy downtime, I also enjoy activity-- and there's been some great activity here in the press, nice stream of reviews coming onto Amazon for my book, and my training for therapists have all been really fun ways to connect with like-minded people all over the world. I'm also super excited for my upcoming interview with Kenny Xu on his new book (link bellow). If you do read his book, let me know if you have any question to suggest I ask him-- I find his work fascinating!

One more tie-in here regarding downtime: We find more time for relaxation when we can automate the "legwork" of our lives as much as possible.  One way I've done this is by using the Acorns app to automatically pull a small amount of money into an investment account each day.  It's been a fun way to save up for the proverbial rainy day.  Try my link above, and we'll both get $5 in our Acorns account.  Just confirming that although the $5 is a nice token from Acorns, I'm recommending this product because I truly like using it-- it somehow makes the process of saving and investing fun and interesting, even for someone like me who is more of a words/feelings sort of person:)

As always, please feel free to hit "reply" and tell me what's happening in your life, and/or what you'd like to see featured next month.  In the meantime, happy downtime... enjoy the summer!=)

TOXIC POSITIVITY

Toxic positivity can sound like a confusing phrase at first: after all, positivity is supposed to be positive, right? However, just like even something as innocent and healthy-sounding as jogging can become toxic if taken to an extreme, so can positivity.

Taken to an extreme, positivity becomes toxic and deprives us of the motivation to make healthy changes that the awareness of a negative, uncomfortable reality would otherwise stimulate us to make. Read the full article here.

THE HIGH FUNCTIONING HOTSPOT PODCAST

I'm so excited to interview my next podcast guest, Kenny Xu! Kenny is a lead insider on the Ivy League discrimination cases, a commentary writer for The Federalist, The Washington Examiner, The Daily Signal, and Quillette, and the author of the new book, "An Inconvenient Minority: The Attack on Asian American Excellence and the Fight for Meritocracy".

An Inconvenient Minority chronicles the political and economic repression and renaissance of a long ignored racial identity group―and how they are central to reversing America’s cultural decline and preserving the dynamism of the free world.
